Sherman Clay Piano Testimonials
Seattle Opera has relied on Sherman Clay for high quality pianos for over nine years. Their knowledgeable staff is sensitive to both our artistic needs and financial considerations, and has always provided us with friendly and responsive service. In 2008 Sherman Clay saved the day for our Young Artist Program, when the young artists arrived at a venue which lacked an appropriate piano for their performance that evening. An emergency call was placed to Ben Klinger at Sherman Clay, and within the hour a delivery truck pulled up with a beautiful, in-tune, grand piano. It is this kind of exceptional commitment to music and to their customers that makes Sherman Clay a valued partner and the Preferred Piano Provider for Seattle Opera.

As a professional piano technician for over 35 years, I appreciate the integrity of the management and sales staff at Sherman Clay’s Seattle showroom. Again and again, I’ve seen their commitment to quality and service after the sale. It’s a great pleasure for me to associate with such knowledgeable and caring people.

Sherman Clay has been my primary resource for finding excellent pianos my entire professional career. I have found them to carry high quality instruments at competitive prices over the years, and students, parents and teacher to whom I have referred Sherman Clay have been very pleased with their purchases.
Ben Klinger, Manager, has been unusually accommodating and helpful during the current economic downturn, offering incredible bargain prices. I would urge anyone looking for a quality piano (even a keyboard) in any price range, to visit Mr. Klinger at Sherman Clay.
I have been thrilled with the quality of product, enthusiasm, character and ethics that the Seattle Sherman Clay folks bring to Washington. Ben Klinger and his staff are a "top notch" organization. You always know that they are honest and genuine in their approach to educating the public about their fabulous pianos and bringing forth the joy that these magnificent instruments create in one's life.
I always send my piano students and friends to Sherman Clay when they are interested in a piano as I know that they will be treated fairly and will be happy in the end.
In addition, Seattle Sherman Clay is bringing the public interest and awareness levels up by offering free programming and concert opportunities in their store. This is a very exciting program of events!
"Ten Grands" has been sponsored by Sherman Clay for the past 10 years...and worked with the Seattle Sherman Clay for the past 3 years! We have been thrilled with their sponsorship in providing 10 amazing pianos for our annual concert each year at the Benaroya Hall! We couldn't do it without Sherman Clay's support!

Without any doubt, by working very close with local music organizations and teachers, Sherman Clay of Seattle has become the center of pianistic activities, a crucial educational center for youth, professionals and amateurs. They don't just sell the best pianos: the art scene of Seattle would not be as vital without them.

The purchase of our Henry Miller electronic baby grand was a great experience with Sherman Clay. From the opening demo in the showroom in Seattle, to the delivery of the piano to our home went quickly and smoothly. When a problem did occur with the electronics, Ben Klinger and his staff were quick to resolve and communication was excellent. It has been a terrific addition to our home.

I can gladly say that the store and Mr. Ben Klinger have been most cooperative in all aspects of our music endeavor.
For example, Seattle Symphony had a sold out event called Celebrate Asia. Some people could not get a ticket or the schedule did not allow them to attend. Ben gladly collaborated with Seattle Symphony and Celebrate Asia committee to hold a special reception for the main performers at Sherman Clay Store-Seattle. The committee and the symphony took care of all the cost. Also, the store and Ben collaborated with Japanese community in promoting the performance of Seattle Symphony principle trombonist debut as a soloist at the concert which featured a new trombone concert written for him specifically. There are other examples that Mr. Ben Klinger has helped in promoting symphonic music in town. Seattle Symphony took notice of his contribution and plans to hold more receptions at the store for their donors, et al.
We are very happy with the leading role that Sherman Clay-Seattle is taking the music community.

Sherman Clay in Seattle is a magical place. You can say the spirit of Piano lives there. Every time I perform, attend a concert, or simply chat with a team, I leave with a sense of belonging to an infinite world of music, exciting, inspiring, full of passion and joy. Don't go to Sherman Clay Seattle if you are not ready to fall in love with a piano for a lifetime!

I would highly recommend Oscar Spidahl, a sales representative of Sherman Clay. He is ethical, kind and caring. He has helped many I know get into a significantly better piano that they ever thought was possible. I've worked with him to purchase a piano for a church, for a Community College and for private piano students, and at every step did the best for everyone involved.
As a member of the Seattle Music Teachers' Organization for many years, we have been very pleased to have the use of the lovely auditorium at the downtown Sherman Clay store for holding our meetings and recitals. We have been very grateful for the fine quality of the pianos that Sherman Clay has provided for us, and for the kindness of the staff for these events.
My husband and I purchased a used small Steinway upright from Sherman Clay this past year. We bought it for a student foundation. Sherman Clay was very helpful to us, tuned the piano twice free of charge for this foundation--when the weather was bad, and it affected the pitch. We have been very pleased with the service that Sherman Clay gave us during this transaction, and highly recommend them.
I only have a positive experience w/ Ben from Sharman Clay Seattle. I recommended my students whenever they are looking for a piano, and I always receive great response about their services. Ben has a deep understanding of the craft and can always be relied upon to provide the most knowledgeable advice.

Sherman and Clay has been an outstanding supporter of my studio, my performance career, and an excellent instrument dealer to my students. I have had the best dealings possible with this esteemed business in my 29 years of living in the Puget Sound area. I really can’t imagine what the piano scene would be in our region without Sherman and Clay! I wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone interested in purchasing a first rate instrument which includes an impressive support service.

Sherman Clay has been part of the musical world of Seattle for many years and has always been supportive to the teaching and performing community of Seattle. They have really gone out of their way to be an inspiration to performers by providing recital opportunities including their weekly noon recital series. This has provided a rare opportunity in Seattle for students and performers who need a chance to perform or to start performing again. They have always been caring and shown great integrity and reliability in dealing with my students who have gone to them at my recommendation to purchase a piano to suit their individual needs and budget. The people who work there have a thorough knowledge of what they sell and also an enthusiasm and sense of caring which only comes from within.
First, thank you for always answering my questions and requests very quickly, for example, my recent request for information for tax purposes. My very grateful thanks for treating me with utmost care last summer, while on my quest for my “dream piano.” With your help, and others connected with Sherman Clay, the whole experience was enlightening and a mountaintop high, which has been continuing with the aftercare which my Steinway B has received. All my piano friends, and studio families have been enriched by this experience. Thank you, thank you!
I've been a piano technician in the South Puget Sound area for 18 years and have had a chance to deal with a number of piano stores during my career. I have been consistently impressed with Sherman Clay Seattle. They are dedicated to taking care of their customers. When I have had a technical issue with a piano they are always very responsive and want me to fix the problem correctly, in other words, they stand behind their pianos. The fact that some of the Northwest's top piano technicians have an association with Sherman Clay Seattle is a testimony to their reputation. Nice job folks!

Sherman Clay Pianos in Seattle has hosted and supported a wide variety of delightful concerts over many years. Classical and jazz artists really have a "home" here. I have enjoyed performing at this beautiful venue, and feel very welcomed by the superb employees of Sherman Clay.
Moving to Seattle from Los Angeles, the first thing one notices, after the incredible beauty of the Northwest, is how nice, polite and, most of all, genuine are the people of this city. Getting to know the guys at Sherman Clay takes this nice surprise to the next level.
In my about a year long acquaintance with Ben, Oscar and others at Sherman Clay as a performer, I experienced nothing but professionalism, honesty, personal warmth and desire to do their utmost to make sure that your needs are met. I would gladly recommend Seattle Sherman Clay to anyone who is interested in piano purchase, taking lessons or any other piano related activity.
…They made the experience of buying a Steinway as wonderful as the pleasure of playing it…
Shopping at Sherman Clay was a delightful experience – what ‘being a customer’ used to be! I was graciously treated and brought a latte, loaned a book and treated with every consideration. Ben Klinger helped me to find a piano that matched my needs and budget. Even the piano delivery was handled with every attention to detail. I am a very happy budding pianist now!
As a teacher I have been delighted with the support I've got for having my recitals at Sherman Clay. I like recitals to be relaxed and fun and Sherman Clay has been perfect for that with its intimate recital hall. Of course my students also get to play some wonderful pianos. It is exciting for them and they truly can sound their best.
I've also found Sherman Clay to be the best piano store to refer my students to. I tried several and now send them all to Sherman Clay. I can trust the salespeople to be relaxed and very well-informed without any high pressure tactics. For my own studio I've chosen a Boston grand. I am very happy to have a fully expressive piano for both my own playing and for my developing student players.
Sherman Clay has been a wonderful resource for my studio and the students. We've enjoyed having our annual recitals hosted in the recital room at Sherman Clay which has given the students an opportunity to perform on world class instruments. The level of professionalism and the on-going support has been outstanding. The studio always looks forward to opportunities to play on Sherman Clay instruments.
Over the many years, my family (3rd. generation Seattle) has purchased no fewer than 3 Steinways going back nearly 70 years! I have purchased other models having been in the hotel business for some 25 years. Without exception, Sherman Clay has always provided the finest in instruments & the finest in service.
Most recently, the weekly performances have been a constant source of joy provided during these exceedingly trying economic times. Bravo to Sherman Clay, and the fine job that Ben Klinger is providing.

As a local Seattle piano technician, I have been been tuning pianos at Sherman & Clay's downtown Seattle location for several years. It's a positive atmosphere, and I enjoy greatly being part of the team. The store has been in Seattle for many decades, even in the same structure, and I feel like I am one small figure in a long parade of people who love music in general, and pianos in particular, marching through the decades.
Registered Piano Technician
… As a concert artist and instructor of pianists, I am always exploring piano stores to hear what is available. When I walked into Sherman-Clay, I immediately fell in love with it's gorgeous pianos and elegant environment. Then I met the people at Sherman-Clay and that is what brought me back to their store to purchase my own piano and recommend Sherman-Clay to my students. The people at Sherman-Clay make that piano store unique and special. They are not out to sell you a piano and forget about you. They are all educated musicians themselves and are genuinely interested in the music community here in Seattle, and have generated an unprecedented quantity of quality music programs and festivals that celebrate the art of piano music. At Sherman-Clay it is truly an enjoyable, artistic experience to buy a piano. They present their pianos not just a musical instruments, but more as a magical experience of sound, whether you come listen to programs at the store or take one of those magnificent pianos home with you.
I hope the fact that I have, from time to time, had a professional relationship with Sherman, Clay, won't prejudice my endorsement, but actually validate it. In fact I have been a sales representative at the Seattle store in 1974-5, again in 2004-5. but also I have been a consultant, service provider, AND a customer.
In my 35-year observation of dealing with associates, customers, artists, and the the public--from top management through the store management and sales representatives--Sherman Clay defines two qualities which any successful business MUST possess: Respect and integrity. One is the result of the other, and neither can be demonstrated and achieved except over time.
In the example of Sherman, Clay over a century and a quarter, this fair dealing and stability have been enhanced by its products--always the best in their respective price levels. The 'quick sale' attitude is absent. Instead, real value for the price has resulted in permanence and stability benefiting everyone, but mostly the customer.
Keep up the good work!
Roy A. Matson
Sherman Clay downtown Seattle is a wonderful venue for performer and audience alike. The intimate atmosphere is conducive to expressing oneself on an excellent piano.
Thank you for selecting the piano for the recital so well. It has been a pleasure to play the best; Steinway, of course, a couple weeks ago in the Sherman-Clay Store. I look forward to working with you in the future.
I have greatly enjoyed your brilliant Thursday luncheon recitals and admire the artists participating. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

With out a doubt there is no finer customer service to be found than at Sherman-Clay. Yes, they sell pianos, but they also believe in making the customer feel welcome and offer service for those who take the time to enter their magical world. You might not think you need a piano, but you do need the feeling of calm that surrounds the entire store. Take a few moments out of your day to walk in, you will not be sorry. And maybe sometime in the future you will find the instrument that fits your home and your needs.
I am writing to thank Sherman Clay for being a treasured resource in the Seattle area. I am a piano teacher on the Eastside. Not only did I buy my own piano at the downtown Sherman Clay years ago, I have also sent numerous piano students to Gary Finkelstein to purchase beautiful instruments.
His knowledge, professionalism, and genuine caring sets him apart. I highly recommend anyone considering purchasing a piano to contact him. I know that my students' families are assured of not only purchasing a top-quality instrument, but getting the very best value as well.
I have been holding my Student Piano Recitals at Sherman Clay for years. My students are always thrilled to be there, along with their parents. To be able to perform on the gorgeous Steinway pianos, and to be surrounded by the elegant atmosphere is always exciting for everyone.
Thank you to everyone at Sherman Clay for all the years of fantastic support.
I feel very blessed to have them here in our community.
“Steinways run in my family and I play with one professionally. So when it was time to purchase my own, I knew exactly where I wanted to go look—the same place all of the other Steinways in my experience had come from—Sherman Clay. And I wasn’t disappointed. After several months of assistance from very helpful (and very patient staff), I was invited on a pleasant and informative personalized 2-hour tour of over 20 new and pre-owned pianos on display at the Seattle Design Center. It was there that I found my “Grande Dame”—a 1927 Series L walnut-stain beauty. And she is my pride and joy! There’s no better place to go for a Steinway than Sherman Clay.”

My experiences with Oscar and Sherman Clay in Seattle, whether they were related to my volunteer work with the Seattle Symphony Volunteers and its Wine and Wisdom events, or my own Viva la Musica Club, or your wonderful piano club series or your lunchtime concerts, were all marvelous! In all of them, whether during preparation and /or attendance, I was left with the feeling of being welcomed and “pampered,” making all these experiences unforgettable ones. No doubt, you must continue doing what you are doing and much more if it were possible.
Many, many thanks!
Thank you to Sherman Clay of Seattle for helping me with the process of getting my piano, including trading in my old piano for the new one. My old piano was exchanged with the full price of what I had paid about 10 years ago; therefore, I was able to buy the used Steinway which I love very much. I am a piano teacher, but I was not familiar with the function of piano in such details among many brands and styles. Ben explained them very clearly and recommended several pianos out of a huge selection. After test playing, I chose one I loved the most. It had been well tuned and maintained. I wonder what I would have gotten if I went through internet shopping without actually playing and touching. Offering a free tuning by my favorite tuner after delivery was a bonus. The process was very quick and easy. The piano now has a tone which extends to my heart. Thank you so much for helping in the process and offering your support. I am very glad I made this choice, buying a valuable piano from reliable company, Sherman Clay.
I have had many good experiences over the past 20 years with Sherman Clay pianos. I have helped students and friends find excellent pianos to purchase and have always appreciated the knowledge and help offered by the sales staff. The range of pianos ,from the beautiful Steinway on through to the various new and used fine pianos available is the most comprehensive in the city. I also salute Sherman Clay for promoting the musical life in Seattle by offering it's space and pianos for student recitals as well as other pianistic and musical events.I have had nothing but positive experiences in presenting my own piano recitals there. I would say that Sherman Clay is a vital part of our community's musical life. From offering the best pianos, the professional expertise, and the genuine promotion of great music, Sherman Clay Pianos has my respect and sincere appreciation.
I recently purchased my new Steinway B from Sherman Clay and was so impressed with the professional and respectful sales staff. Their experience and knowledge of the instrument (most are long time players with musical degrees), were key in helping me to choose a piano that was right for my needs. Their after-sales support is superior, and I always feel pampered by their immediately and gracious responsiveness. I would highly recommend the Sherman Clay staff to anyone interested in purchasing a fine piano.
I am very thankful for the long term support your store has provided to the music community, the excellent customer service and support, and wonderful creditability of your store.
As a new teacher to Seattle, Sherman Clay has helped me locate students as well as provide all the answers to the questions that parents have when deciding to make the addition of a piano to their homes. Unprecedented service and thorough knowledge of the instrument is a constant at Sherman Clay.

My husband and I continue to be very pleased with the service and our experience with Sherman Clay of Seattle. We were looking for a baby grand piano and found a beautiful walnut piano. Ben Klinger, the manager of the Seattle Sherman Clay store assisted us by providing us with the history of the piano, including its upkeep and maintenance. Mr. Klinger responded to all of our questions in a timely and courteous manner. We love our piano and highly recommend anyone interested in a piano or piano lessons to visit Sherman Clay of Seattle.

I recently purchased a Steinway grand piano thru Sherman Clay. I'm very impressed with their professionalism, support, and follow up in regards to the purchase. The employees truly believe in their product and have a passion for what they do . That made a big difference in the ongoing joy I have with my Steinway piano.
For a few years now my family has come to Sherman Clay Seattle a couple of times a year for my kids' piano recital. I was impressed that Sherman Clay continually provides the facilities to support local piano teachers and its managers take time to host each recital. I also got to enjoy music from a Steinway piano and was amazed how much better my children's music sounded on a Steinway over our upright at home. Late last year we decided to trade up for a Boston grand after a piano recital at Sherman Clay. Ben Klinger, the manager and the host of the recital, was very helpful and patient in educating us on the sound, tone, and actions of different pianos. He selected a few pianos for us to try after listening to our needs. Two weeks later we had our newly purchased piano at home all set up ready to be played. Our whole experience with Sherman Clay was great. Deciding which piano was the toughest part but Ben made it easier by bring the pianos into the same room so we can test them side by side. We also avoided the back and forth price negotiation because Ben offered us a very good price and a high trade-in value for our upright piano the first time. Ben also pulled some strings to have the piano prepared for delivery within a few days of purchased which spanned a major holiday. We have enjoyed our shopping experience at Sherman Clay. We look forward to the day when we will be able to trade-in our Boston for a Steinway at Sherman Clay.
I have been a lifelong Sherman Clay customer. In 1973 my parents bought a used Steinway Model O which I had with me for most of my life. More recently I traded that in on a new Steinway Model B. To be a great musician, you need a great instrument. Having the B has had a profound impact on my playing. I hope that all amateur pianists will visit this Seattle institution and consider upgrading their musicianship.
I bought a Steinway B from Sherman Clay this summer and it has enhanced my life, teaching, and playing beyond measure! The staff, especially Ben Klinger, was completely available at all times and helped me through this big and very exciting decision. I always felt as though I was an important client and was treated with warmth, support, and patience. They made every effort to match me with the piano of my dreams and price range with no pressure. I am completely delighted with my new piano and with the service at Sherman Clay.

I cannot begin to express my gratitude to Sherman Clay for the exemplary things that you have done for the music and especially piano community of Seattle. You have feely given of your time, space and pianos for our annual Chopin Festival for children. You are not merely a piano store, you are like a vital heart-beat, helping pianists meet, perform and interact.
You are a very caring organization and I am sure that you help folks select pianos in the same way you help our piano community continue to inspire playing and performing.

… as an independent piano tuner-technician I have worked with nearly every major piano retailer in the Seattle area over the years. The Seattle Sherman Clay team is my favorite of them all. They sincerely believe in the product and the experience they provide for the Seattle area—Steinway pianos. Their business ethics, integrity, support of their clients and relationship with the local music community are disarming. I’ve never heard them bad mouthing their competitors or say anything negative about anyone or other entities in the piano industry. They seem to ride above all that, minding their own business, and they do it exceptionally well. Their passion for what they are doing is charming. Several managers and sales team members have changed since I started my business relationship with the Seattle Sherman Clay store, but the same character and spirit that fills the showroom and sales personnel offices prevails and gets even more pleasant form taking on the personal qualities of the current manager, Ben Klinger.
I often witness as the Seattle Sherman Clay team goes an “extra mile” and more in their sincere desire to make their customers happy, not just to make a sale. They like inspiring their customers by supporting their musical efforts, promptly taking care of the issues if any, encouraging their creative initiatives, and simply staying in touch as friends. As their vendor I prepare their instruments to be shown to the shopping customers, provide warranty service and first in-home tunings that usually come free with the purchase of a new instrument. The Sherman Clay team is very knowledgeable of a piano's potential, and quite often I’m requested to customize piano’s touch and/or tone to customer’s liking. I think whoever buys from them or does business with them like myself, feels welcome into a happy family and finds a lasting positive experience filled with wonderful piano music…
I'm a pianist and teacher here in Seattle and am a member of the Seattle Music Teacher's Association.
I just wanted to thank you for the many years of encouragement and support you have offered me and my students. We have had recitals in your recital hall and have been able to rehearse concertos on Steinway pianos in preparation for our performances. It feels like you have taken a personal interest in helping the students develop their interest and music practice.
I feel fortunate that you contribute so much to the music community with your outreach and programs. I'll always remember the morning with Lang Lang and being with him in your store when he greeted teachers and their students and played! I have enjoyed attending many programs including the all Bach recitals of Randolph Hokanson.
Thank you for facilitating and promoting the appreciation and study of music in our community!
The Northwest Chopin Festival would not be possible without the magnanimous support of Sherman Clay in Seattle. Sherman Clay has graciously offered their facilities and the use of their fine instruments for Festival activities, including master classes and honors concerts. For the last eight years, up to 150 young people have participated in this event each February. Sherman Clay has consistently "gone the extra mile" to ensure that the event runs smoothly and that the participants, their teachers and the adjudicators feel welcome and comfortable. We deeply appreciate Sherman Clay's generosity and dedication to piano music and pianists.

"I enjoy working with the wonderful people at Sherman Clay. Their service and dedication is beyond stellar. Time, after time, they have proven that their interest's lie with my complete satisfaction."
"Ben's depth of knowledge about music and pianos is impressive. With his delightful personality and great customer service (including the rest of the Sherman Clay team), Ben was an incredible match-maker. I'd been thinking about a real piano versus my electronic keyboard for several years, and Ben helped me find a fabulous instrument at a wonderful price! I'm thrilled with the rich sound and my only frustration is trying to find more time to play. I look forward to seeing you at your generous concerts! Bravo, Mr. Klinger!"

"Ben Klinger and his staff at Sherman Clay are exceptional in their dedication to customer satisfaction. I've been so impressed with their commitment to providing customers with support and service at the time of sale and afterward. When buying something as significant and personal as a fine piano, it is so important to know that companies of the caliber of Steinway and Sherman Clay stand behind your instrument. This commitment to excellent service and support distinguishes the experience of working with professionals like Ben. I also appreciate Sherman Clay's efforts in presenting events for music lovers, with opportunities to hear wonderful artists in an intimate setting, as well as hosting educational programs. Bravo!"
Sherman Clay of Seattle is an absolutely wonderful place; both to do business with and to visit. The people are extremely kind and expert in their product knowledge; particularly Ben Klinger. We rented a beautiful grand piano for several months and had many concerts and parties with different players who all loved its sound. If you haven’t attended one of their concerts, it’s a must do! We can’t say enough about how much we appreciate Sherman Clay of Seattle.
Four Seasons Seattle
I cannot say enough positive things about every aspect of Seattle Sherman Clay. They have opened their doors and arms to me and my students for years. I have performed a number of times in their two lovely spaces, on gorgeous-sounding pianos, as have my students, both in concerts and in competitions. They host the Seattle Music Teachers meetings and provide teaching space for local teachers. Every Thursday noon they host an in-house concert. Sherman Clay has even hosted benefits for community organizations. The staff is knowledgeable and kind, never aggressive, and make it their mission to find the right piano at the right price for each customer. Each staff person not only understands the mechanism of a piano, but also that inexpressible special thing we call "sound" or "tone". Their guidance and intelligence help all of us in this community dedicated to music-making.
