Why you should select a Steinway for your performance or event

Whether a Steinway piano is destined for the concert stage or your living room, each Steinway is built to one, and only one quality standard.  It's what the world's greatest artists select for their performances.

In the basement of Steinway Hall is the famous “piano bank” where there is an exclusive inventory of Steinway concert grand pianos that are maintained for the use of performing artists. More than 98% of today’s concert pianists expressly choose Steinway for all of their performances. The rewards are the unrivaled sound and responsiveness that enable each artist to express every emotion.  All of the Steinway C&A pianos at Sherman Clay passed through this famous basement before heading west to become part of the west coast concert fleet!

Each handmade Steinway piano has its own distinct personality and “soul”, a quality of supreme importance to concert artists. For decades, these gifted pianists have come to Sherman Clay to select the perfect Steinway piano for their upcoming performance with the San Francisco Symphony, and at famous venues like Benaroya Hall, the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall and many other performing arts venues.

The Steinway Artists

Today, more than 90 percent of the world's active concert pianists - over 1,300 artists - bear the title "Steinway Artist".  Each owns a Steinway. All choose to perform on Steinway pianos exclusively. Importantly, none are paid to do so; their only inducement is the unrivaled sound and responsiveness of their Steinway pianos.

In North America, artists select their Steinway for concert performances from the company's unique "piano bank," an inventory of more than 300 pianos valued at over $15 million and are maintained to concert standards by an exclusive network of Steinway dealers. The famed "basement" of New York's Steinway Hall, at 109 West 57th Street in New York City, is the bank's home office. Piano banks are maintained at Steinway dealerships in cities throughout the country to serve performing artists. In all other countries, major concert venues in each town own Steinway & Sons instruments which the artist can use.
